Target Audience Research
I have chosen to research my target audience of age 15-25 year old people via online survey in order to gain lots of quick responses into how to proposed soap opera idea would be taken.
Due to the nature of the open-ended question used within my online survey, when asking people which soap operas they have viewed the variation of answers of people watching certain ones or in fact a variation of ways of saying no has led to many different categories of bars. Interpreting this bar chart shows that the majority of people (18/25) do not watch soap operas at all, 3/25 view them occasionally with the remainder watching a mix between Coronation Street, Eastenders and Casualty.
My online survey has targeted my age range accurately and found out that in general my age group does not watch soap operas generally because they feel that they are aimed towards an older audience due to the issues shown within them along with the characters feeling unrelatable and unrepresentative of the target audience within the way in which they are portrayed with personality and certain issues. This will help me to develop my ideas on my soap opera further as it allows me to make sure my issues and characters represent a younger audience so that they will find it interesting and want to watch it. Furthermore, my research shows that in general, people like the crime drama genre in general and specifically within soap operas people would enjoy watching one related to love/cheating and murder very highly - therefore giving support to my idea for No Body No Crime.
I will further develop my research by asking a small number of interview questions in order to gain more detailed data and reasons as to why people feel certain ways towards soap operas.
1. Why do you feel that people your age do not watch soap operas?
2. Would you be more likely to watch a crime hybrid soap rather than just a normal soap? Why?
3. Do you often sit down at a specific time to watch a program? If not - would you?
From these questions which I asked 3 people from my target audience, I have determined that this age range does not tend to watch soap operas due to the storylines not feeling aimed towards them and the use of many middle aged characters. People would be more likely to watch a hybrid genre soap with crime due to enjoying crime scripts so making the storyline more interesting. Many people do not sit down to watch a program as they prefer to watch things on demand due to a busy schedule.
Areas I will Script
Script 1 Middle of Ep.1 - Este finds out that John has been cheating on her with her close friend - Alana. Este lets on that she has found out due to small things left lying around and unknown bank transactions. She tells Taylor and Danielle over a dinner at their favourite restaurant which they attend every Tuesday night - without inviting Alana as they discuss what Este will do next - she's going to call him out. Este discusses the small things that she has found that have raised her suspicious and Danielle and Taylor agree that Alana too had been acting strange - along with John although they never seemed to trust him anyway. (2 minute/3 minute conversation) This will suit my target audience as the characters seem relatable due to the age range my soap opera is targeting matching the age of the characters. Furthermore, in my research, people said they would be very interested in watching a soap opera regarding cheating and crime meaning this sets the rest of the plot up. This will be near the end of the episode in order to set up for Este calling John out and leaving the episode on a cliff hanger as typical soap operas do.
Script 2 - At their regular Italian night at the restaurant on Tuesday, Este doesn't turn up. This is unusual. Danielle and Taylor begin to get worried and walk down to where Este used to live with John as it just a few houses down - Evermore is a small town as many soap operas are set in. They see Alana and John laughing in the window - acting like nothing ever happened and discuss what they think happened - they know he must have something to do with it. This will suit my target audience as the majority said they enjoy the genre of crime and would watch this within a soap - therefore setting up for Este's disappearance.
Script 3 - They know John made her go missing. They don't know how and they don't know where but they know he did it? No amount of police questioning can get down to the bottom of where Este has gone. Their search changes from them trying to find Este to trying to get revenge. The episode ends on a cliff hanger as they decide to get John back for what he did to Este. This will suit my target audience
